Trip Reports

August 19 - Afternoon on the Jordan River

Published on 8/19/2011
As a new member of the Club, I was surprised when Lois told me that I
should write the trip report. To me, this is like handing your six
year old the keys to the car and expecting him to drive it. However,
here are my impressions of the trip.

It was a very warm afternoon when we arrived at Graves Crossing. There
were at least ten cars there and twenty people ahead of us, six or
eight of them ready to set out in large bright yellow tubes. Oy vey!
Getting past them later downstream was the first challenge of the day.

The second came at Webster where we had planned to stretch our legs.
Every inch of the landing was covered by boats and/or people, none of
whom seemed inclined to move, so we asked Lois to go and speak to
them, which had the expected result. A way was parted.

Some time later, as we approached the takeout at Rogers Road, we came
upon five huge inflatable rafts with many screaming children playing
in and around them. Again, we navigated safely past the melee, landed,
loaded up, and departed after spending nearly three hours on the
river. There are still many flowers on the banks, we passed several
fishermen who said they had caught “a few,” and from what I saw,
perhaps the river could use a clean-up. This was a delightful way to
spend the afternoon, and I enjoyed meeting new friends.

Participants: Kayakers Marv & Marlene, Karen, Tracie, and Linda; Lois
in her solo canoe; and Jocelyn & me in The Planter, our stubby tandem
canoe.
