July 2 Pine cleanup changed to dry land

Published on 7/2/2014
We had a Pine River cleanup on the docket for today.  Nine of us drove down there, only to see lots of rain falling on our heads. One of the folks with a smart phone checked the radar.  Cleanup trips do not work well in lots of rain (you can't see the stuff), and that's what was headed our way. We all turned around and drove home.

But after the few hours, the weather cleared up in TC (not so down on the Pine), so Fred, Judy, John & I, plus Jim Breit went out with our grabber sticks to clean the TART Trail.  We spotted a car at Bunker Hill, and then began hiking back from Three Mile Road.  Lots of the usual stuff, plus a computer desk.  It's a lot easier to do a cleanup on a biking/walking trail than on a river.  If you miss grabbing something the first time, your feet don't move (like the boat would).  We ran out of bags by the time we reached Four Mile, and got a huge roll of large bags donated by the manager of Walgreen's.  The managers of Burger King and Einstein Cycles were also very gracious in assisting us.

Lots of trail users thanked us for our community service and we were almost as tired after this outing as we might have been after doing the river.  We also got the see some practice runs of the Blue Angels overhead, and stopped at Burger King for shakes and cold drinks along the way.  The scenery on the TART Trail isn't quite as bucolic as the Pine River, but there were lots of wildflowers alongside (wild rose, sweet pea, etc.), and we felt like we were keeping up the TAPC tradition of caring for Mother Nature.

Sorry no pictures - we just forgot to take any.
