Trip Reports

July 31 Pigeon

Published on 7/31/2010

The Pigeon runs north only a bit east of the Sturgeon but is very different -  narrow, twisty, remote with many fallen trees along the banks ... simply gorgeous but quite shallow running over gravel in many spots, especially near the end.

Eight of us -- John & Lois, Marv & Marlene, Steve,  Dawn, Karen, Jocelyn -- set out in uncertain weather. We hauled boats up at the first possible lunch spot, which even featured a straight-backed chair outfitted with a toilet seat. No one volunteered to demo the facilities, but here are four of us wearing the new club shirts.

We had to pull the boats over one big trunk that spanned the river, perching on the log one by one tugging our boats across.

But what kept me there a long time was the chance to photograph the spectacularly colorful and very fresh Chicken of the Woods (AKA Sulphur Shelf). Lois dubbed it the "Candy Corn Mushroom."

The skies opened up just as we were taking out, leaving us all drenched.  Packing up any old which way, we said our quick goodbyes and look forward to the next river adventure.
