Trip Reports

August 26 Upper Platte River

Published on 8/26/2009

Who came?

Lois, Fred & Judy, Marv & Marlene and Barb Rodenberg

Where did you go?

Upper Platte River from US-31 to Deadstream Road

How was it?

Gorgeous!  We managed to avoid the one party of rental canoeists, and saw virtually no-one else all afternoon.

What kind of boats were there?

One solo canoe (our fearless trip host), the rest in kayaks

Anything noteworthy?

We had gorgeous weather for the paddle, and reveled in the remote feeling of the river at the beginning and end of the trip.  It took us less than 3 hours, with a couple of rest breaks and one short pause for emptying the water out of one of the kayaks.  We spotted several ducks with grown up ducklings, a few great blue herons and two swimming muskrats.  Marv was asked why he bothered to have his life jacket on when it wasn't zipped up, and his response ("It's useful if I want to relax") gave us a new category of paddling gear.  Rather than thinking of it as a PFD, it is now to be known as a PSD - a personal snoozing device!  Special thanks to Judy for her scouting abilities at the end of the trip - no wrong turns this time!
