Trip Reports

South Branch of the Ausable . . . .Finally!

Published on 5/2/2010
Diane and I have wanted to paddle this stretch for a few years, but have not been able to because of work and weather.

Who came?

Dean & Diane, Steve, Karen, Lois & John, Paul

Where did you go?

South Branch of the Ausable, from Paddle Brave Campground to M72 (Smith Bridge)

How was it?

Cloudy skies but pristine river.

What kind of boats were there?

One tandem canoe (J&L), 5 kayaks

Anything noteworthy?

This is a pretty easy stretch of river which flows through the Mason Tract, land donated to the state and not developed in any way.  It was very special to paddle the entire distance of the tract with no housing or cottages.  We stopped at what's left of the Durant castle for lunch, then at the outdoor chapel.  The weather was mostly cloudy with a light sprinkle of rain after our visit to the Chapel.  Very Nice Paddle!!!
