It was a spectacular summer day on the Upper Manistee. Apparently not many folks had paddled the initial section so far this year. John and Jocelyn had to get behind their saws several times to clear out downed trees. Even with that, we stepped or scooted over a number of other logs along the way (water level was down about 8 inches). It all made for a little more work than normal, but the reward of being on this beautiful stretch of river was well worth it.
With the temperature in the 80’s, swim breaks felt really good. Jocelyn set a record by taking the first break. It’s tough to beat Lois into the river. One interesting note is that we had swarming flies around much of the trip. Thankfully, they weren’t biting.
Today we had six kayaks and one solo canoe in our fleet. The participants were: Lois Goldstein and John Heiam, Mike Terrell, Jocelyn Trepte and Max, Jim Feiker, Mike and Barb Rodenberg.
