Short thunderstorms started the day but by meeting time there was no sign of rain, although it remained cloudy. There were 12 participants on the trip, with 11 kayaks and one canoe. The paddlers were: John Heiam & Lois Goldstein, Maureen Anthony, Marcia Billings, Bob Fitch, Jack Kurtz, Karen Mueller, Marlene & Marv Puska, Barb & Mike Rodenberg and Steve Somers. The temperature was in the mid 70’s but it felt warmer, so some members took a swim during our lunch stop.
This was a smart move on their part, as the flies then turned on those who didn’t take a dip. A second swim stop turned out to be a bit too muddy for actual swimming. An interesting sight was noted along the way – wild turkeys climbing the embankment, and later a family of geese – mom, dad and several fur balls. Two DNR officers were cruising the river and asked to see PFD’s. Ice cream cones in Mesick topped off a very pleasant paddle trip.
