September 6 - Boardman, Forks to BB Dam

Published on 9/6/2011
We (Tracie, Linda, John and I) kayaked the Boardman from the Forks to Brown Bridge Dam.

The morning chill was gone and temps were in the mid-60's, with not a cloud in the sky.  Traffic was down, since most of the tourists have left town.  Even the snowbirds will head south soon and we will be left with our gorgeous corner of the world.  As one set of houseguests said on the day they had to leave, "It's another beautiful Traverse City day!"

The water was sparkling, both on the faster sections as well as on the Pond.  And the good news is that the entryway to the pond is MUCH easier than it has been in several years.  Since the dam is being lowered, Mother Nature is helping the Boardman River carve out its own path as it heads downstream.  The channel is deeper than I have ever seen it, except in the very last section of low water, where we had to push ourselves a bit when it got shallow.  There were lots of geese, ducks and swan families watching our progress.  Even the mergansers were calm as we cruised by in the section near Scheck's.  There were only two or three fishermen out on this gorgeous day, and no other paddlers.  We were reminded how very lucky we are to have this as our home town river.

We did pick up a few items of litter, and will plan a more extensive cleanup within the next week or so.
