September 23 - Pine River

Published on 9/23/2011
Today is the autumnal equinox, and fall colors were the theme of the day, so the drive to the Pine was especially enjoyable.  There were three women (Marlene, Tracie and Lois) with blue boats and one guy (Marv) with a yellow one.  Tracie was decked out in her spiffy "safety yellow" TAPC shirt, while Lois made sure that at every moment, she was showing off her primary color ensemble: yellow sprayskirt, blue PFD, red hat.  Marv wore his wool hat Yooper style, perched jauntily on top of his head (I still can't figure out how it stays up there).

Everyone in the group had done all the Pine River cleanups this summer, and we were delighted to see that it was mostly in good shape.  But Marlene still managed to pick up a bagful of trash, which we noticed at one offending downed tree.  No full beer cans this time, though we did find a large can of Deep Woods OFF that will be saved for use on club trips next summer.

We had the river completely to ourselves, and even though the forecast called for intermittent showers, the sun was shining all day long, with an occasional "friendly cloud" overhead.  Nature sightings included several great blue herons, lots of asters, and some nifty mushroom growths on a downed tree.  No mishaps, lots of concentration and a lovely day on the river!
