Sara, Jocelyn, and Jack headed up to the Sturgeon with the usual trepidation in anticipation of a wild and woolly ride. What we found was fast, clear water with no blockages and few obstacles on a beautiful May day. At 185cfs there was adequate water for the inside line and a quick flow. Eddies were strong and could grab you in the many twists and turns encountered and all of us had to pay attention in the corners. The rock gardens weren't exposed while the waves were vigorous in the riffle sections.
The three of us just loped along enjoying the surroundings and the challenges of the river which were mitigated by the excellent clearing job done by Big Bear Outfitter. Conditions can vary dramatically on the Sturgeon sometimes requiring strenuous exertion and distress management. But today was one of those days you could meet the challenge with a smile on your face and the company of good friends. This was indeed a great ride on a great river.
