Ahhhh, another blissful day on the Manistee! Leaders John
and Lois kept us all in check with their walkie-talkies, again splendidly
organizing the trip. Eleven members (John and Lois, Harold and Pam, Mike and
Barb, Fred and Judy, Mary, Tracie and myself) valiantly convened to start our
10 mile paddle from Hodenpyl to Red Bridge. I say valiantly (stubbornly?) convened because
the initial weather forecasts were not encouraging. But the sunshine and swift
breeze (headwind!?!) aborted inclement weather. Judy effortlessly set the pace of our river
journey. We joined the turtles and Canada geese in basking in the sunrays. Occasionally,
we had some class two riffles interspersed into the lazy current. What a hoot! We maneuvered around the river to allow
frolicking kids to plunge into the welcoming cool water from a swinging rope. Our
group took two swimming breaks instead. So refreshing! Fred did manage to work: continuing his
commitment to river clean-up, he brought home a few treasures (two 'single'
flip-flops and the usual river potpourri). Thanks for always keeping our rivers
clean, Fred!
Oh - Lois just informed me that Mary was the envy of the afternoon: the only woman in an otherwise
all male shuttle. Let's hear it for
Mary! Woo-hoo! Afterwards, some paddlers
rewarded themselves with an ice cream stop in Mesick – so yummy! Do try it!
As you can see, fun was had by all - but especially me. As a
new member, I was blessed with the company of amiable folk committed to the
environment, exercise, fellowship and the joy of paddling! My heartfelt thanks to
all!
With appreciation,
Milda
