July 31 - 4th Annual Sturgeon River Clean Sweep

Published on 7/31/2012

July 31, 2102 - 4th Annual Sturgeon River Clean Sweep Event

The Sturgeon River is one of our favorite rivers.  If you have not paddled it, you are missing a treat.

We don't get to paddle it as much as we would like to because it is not an easy trip to make.  It's a long way to drive and it's hard to clean.

The current on Tuesday was fast.  There are places on the Sturgeon where we simply can't stop in time to pick up the trash and we have to leave it.  This was the case on Tuesday when 4 of us - Jocelyn T, Ian M, John M, and Norm F. - met in Wolverine to do the 4th Annual Sturgeon River Clean Sweep.

It had rained quite hard the night before and showers were threatening in the morning when we arrived in Wolverine.  It was cool and there was a light breeze out of the north.  But the weather cleared during the day and the breeze felt good as we cleaned the river to South White Bridge.

We left 1 large bag of trash at Scott Rd.  We left 1 large bag of trash at Rondo Landing and we had 1 large bag of trash at S. White Bridge.   Total, I would estimate that we removed 125 pounds of trash from the river.

The Big Bear Canoe Livery of Indian River picked up the Rondo Landing bag and we took the S. White and Scott Rd Bridge bags on our trailer to Mauldoon's Saloon (formerly Rocky's Roadhouse in Wolverine) where they allowed us to place them in their dumpster.  Thank you Mauldoon's Saloon!

They fed us some really great food and treated us like royalty.  They were very friendly and courteous.  The food was great and very reasonably priced.   We recommend you stop by Mauldoon's Saloon the next time you are in Wolverine.

Since we did a self shuttle, the TAPC was not billed for any expenses.  The BRCS paid for the gas for the cars that carpooled and that brought the trailer.  The trailer made it possible to do the entire shuttle with one car for all 4 of us.

I want to thank those who braved the weather and came to help clean one of the most wonderful rivers we paddle.

I found a wagon wheel - how did it get there?

The little trashy trailer works well for this sort of thing.

Mauldoon's Saloon in Wolverine is our newest favorite place to eat.
