In
cool but sunny weather, eleven of us (John and Marcy from Chicagoland, Lois and
John, Harold and Pam, Gerry and Sue, Judy, Tracie and Kati) paddled from
Wolverine to the Fisher Woods Rd. takeout in Indian River. It was a peaceful,
delightful, uneventful trip, with what felt like perfect Fall weather.
The
water level was just at the median for the Sturgeon, despite the heavy rains two days before. This was, however, an improvement over much of the summer, when
the water levels on that river were well below the median. There was plenty of
water to allow us to get over the gravel bars, and everyone seemed content with
the challenges offered by this very twisty river.
Although
this was Kati's first time on this difficult river, she paddled with good judgment
and elegance. The rest of us bumbled along in the usual manner.
It
felt like an end of summer paddle, beautiful but bittersweet.
