The Boardman is a wonderful river, wider than the Platte, that has a current running about 4-5 MPH. The weather forecast was for rain, however we lucked out and only had clouds. It was a little chilly to start but warmed up later in the trip, which was a good thing because we had one swimmer - not Dwight this time.
We stopped mid-trip, at the horseback campground, to stretch our legs, use the facilities, have a snack, and in some cases, change our clothes. We were back in the water in about a half an hour.
Along the way we (except for me) saw a huge turtle, and a merganser duck. We chased the duck for about 10 minutes only because it would not take flight. The closer we got, the more panic stricken the poor thing became. Eventually it figured out that we were not the aggressor and that it needed to take flight to get away from us.
Lois gave me the history of the how the state got rid of the dam and allowed the pond to drain and let the river take the natural flow, as it exists today.
All in all, the hosts (John and Lois) were well prepared (and let me use a smaller boat), and my fellow paddlers had great stories. I look forward to a great summer with the TAPC.
Thanks - Dwight
