July 11, 2014 - 7th Annual BRCS - National Cherry Festival  - Double Cleanup

The day started out cool and windy and got winder as it progressed.

We had 29 volunteers including the infant that arrived.

Kyle, Sara and Addi Young were given a MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD for
their work to organize and lead crews from the USCG for
4 years in this downtown section.

After the meeting and distribution of awards, knives, boats, gear and instructions,
we broke into two groups and headed out.

We last cleaned this section on May 31, 2014 - Just 6 weeks ago.

The upper section was not too bad but the lower river section was just HORRIBLE.

We found 5 HUGE bags full of trash and had to leave at least
5 bags more still in the river.
There were people camping under the bridges which were deep in trash
and we could not clean there.  I have NEVER seen this section so BAD!

A lady named Becky helped me take three HUGE bags out of my canoe
to a dumpster at the Carnival Lot and we left 2 more at the end.
The Parks and Rec guys who were taking out the downed tree
took our trash for us.

But the confusion caused me to forget to take a group picture at the end.

OUR THANKS TO BECKY and THE PARKS AND REC DEPT!

I hope we are making a difference in this section
of the river but I don't see much improvement year to year.

Here are the pictures from the event.

Any new ideas on how to keep this section cleaner?
Let me know. I am open to any new suggestions.
