The Pine River clean-up crew embarked from the put-in at Peterson heralded by the river trashmasters John Heiam and Lois Goldstein. Garbage handlers included Harold Lassers, Linda Pelkey, Barb and Mike Rodenberg, Jocelyn Trepte, Sue and Gerry Wilgus and Milda Ranney.
It was a glorious day! Sun glistened to expose the myriad remains of discarded items. Keynote discovered treasures ranged from sunglasses, burlap potato sacks, flip flops, tent, beer bong, assorted beverages, a gourmet meal. Sue found an appetizer of carrots, entrée of Bud Light, Nestle crunch for dessert---all in their own respective sealed containers. Please note: all present declined her menu items!
We did take the time to revel in the beauty surrounding us. We were encouraged by a trio of ducklings making their chase of each other under the overhanging branches. A muskrat scampered in the water merrily carrying his captive weeds. Chirping of fowl cheered our escapade. Mosquitoes and deer flies left us alone! Bliss.
All in all, the takeout at Low yielded a heaping total of six giant trash bags, two canoe paddles, one boat cushion and 50% of a plastic construction bucket. If you have not yet made time to help on a river clean-up, consider it! You will not only hone your paddling skills, but do so in the company of others who enjoy the preservation of nature!
Thanks to Pine River Paddlesports Center for the shuttle and canoe a.k.a. garbage barge.
