September 7 Sturgeon River

Published on 9/7/2014

Ten people entered the Sturgeon River Swim Club competition today:

John Heiam, Lois Goldstein, Michael Roberts, Jocelyn Trepte, Tracie Lord, Fred Swartz, Kati Flees, Jackie Anderson, Carrie Metevia, and Henry Eckhardt.

The river was running high and fast (275 CFS) with lots of overhanging branches. Four of our members were inducted into the swim club. One went twice because he had so much fun the first time. We got a chance to use our saws and throw bag, so even those who didn't swim got to participate in the festivities.

It was a gorgeous day - starting in the 60's and finishing in the high 70's. We used Jamie Jacklitch as our shuttle driver - the owner of Sturgeon River Paddlesports.

As usual Fred and Jocelyn (especially Fred), had no trouble filling up trash bags. Fred and John tried to retrieve a rental kayak abandoned in a big sweeper, but the river wanted it more than they did. Besides, it would not have fit in Fred's trash bucket. We again learned how valuable it is to have something colorful and shiny on black paddle blades. Without that visual aid, rescuers would never have found our swimmer's paddle. As one of the three Sturgeon Virgin swimmers stated - "This is a terrific river!"

Six of the group recounted the day's adventures at the Dairy Queen in Indian River. Special thanks to the people who helped with the rescues.
