A hot sunny day, swims in a fairly warm river, no mosquitoes, a few flies, and minimal dust on the back roads - this certainly doesn't sound like a U.P. river trip. John and Lois, Allen, Jocelyn, and John and Angie enjoyed a trip on the Indian River from Tommy Page/10 Mile Bridge to Thunder Lake Road Bridge. This section flows through the Hiawatha National Forest, a real trip into the UP bush, especially for Jocelyn. She had to put on the brakes as a bear crossed the river in front of her. I bet he was looking for some leftover wild blueberry cake we just had. Another bear was encountered by John W. on the return shuttle.
Everyone headed to Newberry afterwards except John and Angie. They checked out the local burger bar just south of Steuben on Hwy. 94 for Doc Fletcher. The Jack Pine Lodge is a good stop for hungry thirsty paddlers.
