June 2 - 1st Annual Upper Platte River Sweep
Upper Platte River for many years. This year, John Ranson of the
He did a great job and (hopefully) will continue to lead this cleanup effort.
Jim Keglovitz offered his house and property in Honor as a putin, takeout, parking
lot, and site for the after-event picnic. THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!! Jim and Claudia.
21 of us gathered at Veteran's Park to discuss the plan of the day.
Since the upstream end of the river had been reported to be pretty clean, 6 of us
chose to paddle there and the rest (15) worked downstream from Jim Keglovitz's
house in Honer to Deadstream Rd Landing just upstream of Platte Lake.
The upstream folks got a respectable amount of trash.
But since the lower section from Honor to Deadstream Rd Landing had never been
cleaned that larger group found a different type of trash. Along with the usual type
of trash, they found large pieces of construction debris that had been lost
in a flood which occurred in September of 2014.
On the way, we had dropped the larger debris at a property owned by Rod Meade.
After we loaded our boats, gear and trash, we all met up at Jim's house for a lunch
provided by John Ransom and Ashley of the Benzie Conservation District.
Then we ate.
After the picnic we went over to the drop off site at Rod Mead's House on Indian
pickup truck for removal to the Veteran's Park dumpster.
I want to thank everyone for coming to help do this great job for the Upper Platte River.
A special thank you goes to Jim and Claudia Keglovitz for their help and hospitality.
