June 23 - Sturgeon Thrillseeker with 2 first-timers

Published on 6/23/2016

A fast, last-minute Sturgeon Thrillseeker from Wolverine to Fisher Woods with 2 Sturgeon first-timers, Kathy Cook-Dowd & Tami Stagman. Only 2 other kayakers until we passed by Big Bear's put-in at S White Rd. The woman took a dangerous spill, pinning her kayak under an overhanging tree, but the man & I got it out & she was fine. Enjoyed the blue flag irises, a bunch of columbine, a family of Canada geese & following a merganser.

NOTE: One from Sunday & today's trips bumped logs & took unplanned swims, but both did their own self-rescues with no help needed. Sturgeon River Paddlesports rarely puts paddlers on at Rondo or downstream since he only clears to there & more experience is needed to safely paddle the lower sections to Fisher Woods. My status today: only 1 unplanned eddy out & 1 log bump. Sara Cockrell
