Trip Reports

August 17 Pere Marquette

Published on 8/17/2016
It was raining hard when we left the TC area, but the forecast called for only scattered showers.  Also, we looked at the radar, and down near Baldwin, things looked more settled.  Everyone brought raingear, sprayskirts and extra layers (several of us had been surprised by wet weather last Sunday), and none of it was needed!  We had perfect sunshine all day long!

Our trip on the Pere Marquette went from Bowman Bridge to Upper Branch, including a stop for lunch at Rainbow Rapids and another short break at Sulak.  The river levels were delightful, and we had to pay attention to both the current and the occasional obstructions.  Terry remarked that she was learning a lot about reading the water, and it was a good stream to have some practice.

Marv and Marlene received some gasoline gift cards from four TAPC Board members, to thank them for providing numerous shuttle services all season long.  A nice surprise!

John appreciated once again being surrounded by a bevy of women, and continues to wonder why this never happened to him when he was a teenager.

Tracie modeled her new article of paddling gear: the PFP.  With rain pants (admittedly not at all necessary, but she was chilly) and boots, she had a nice air pocket to give her Personal Flotation Pants!

Linnaea enjoyed being out with a group that actually keeps paddling as we head downstream.  We aren't fast, but we keep going.

Jackie demonstrated true school bus driver skill by transporting 4 kayaks on her new Yakima trailer, and said it's much easier than handling 40 little kids on her usual route.

John and I were glad that we didn't let a few raindrops deter us from heading down south.  It was a glorious day, with good friends, good weather and Jones ice cream as the reward!
