Trip Reports

June 29 Jordan River

Published on 6/29/2017
With several days of rain behind us, we decided to switch the location and timing for today's paddle from all day on the Sturgeon to an afternoon cruise down the Jordan.  Jocelyn and Harold met John & me for a 12:30 brunch at Shirley's in Mancelona - world's best cranberry nut bread - and then we headed to Grave's Crossing.  Don from Swiss Hideaway did the shuttle for us, and we were off.  The water level was about a foot over normal, but it didn't rain on us!  The river was pushy, but we didn't have much difficulty maneuvering around the downed trees.  Perhaps decades of practice has paid off?  Lots of showy lady slippers, and the easiest take-out at Rogers Road that I have ever seen.  The 4-by-4 at the landing was about 6 inches underwater, so we paddled right up onto the lawn!  Nobody else was on the river, so it was neat to have it all to ourselves.

Here are three from me ... Jocelyn
John leaving the takeout at Graves Crossing ... and immediately on river right was the first of a number of stands of Showy Orchids.

An amazing show this year, but they are fading fast.
One still in its prime
