July 11 Sturgeon River
Published on 7/11/2017
Lots of tight turns around downed trees. We helped some locals who were overwhelmed by the current. The Sturgeon is not a river for novices!
Everyone worked together after each mishap: Babs caught the paddle, Greg yanked out the spray skirt, Danny got the sunhat (but it was lost again in a subsequent capsize), Lois captured the boat, and John helped empty it. Lessons learned: always slow down and be ready to back ferry, look ahead at all times, make sure your bow and stern lines can be grabbed and unfurled easily (just tuck them underneath the bungees), and make sure your hatch has been emptied of water after an unplanned swim break.
Even though some local groups paddle and clean the Sturgeon often, there's a lot of stuff that people lose - we saw numerous water bottles, beer cans and flip flops.
Note: there is a big cleanup trip planned on the Sturgeon for Saturday August 19.
Our group had a blast!
