June 10 - Boardman from BBL to Beitner

Published on 6/10/2018
Terry & Cyndi joined trip host Lois for a calm trip down the Boardman on Sunday morning.  John Heiam helped with the shuttle; Lois will tip him when they get home.  We saw a couple of fishermen at Brown Bridge Landing, and a few folks having coffee on their back porches.  After we passed under the massive American flag, we saw only one small group, and they were parked for a short break.  We did spot a lot of geese with goslings, and mallards too.  Tons of wild irises have bloomed, both yellow and purple.  It was a delightful outing!
P.S.  We have received word from the Grand Traverse Conservation District that the river should not be paddled below Oleson Bridge all the way to Sabin Dam, due to construction around the new Cass Street bridge and the removal of Sabin Dam.  There are lots of signs posted near Beitner indicating that fact.  Nevertheless, we watched as a couple of groups were launching at Beitner, and some hadn't even determined where they would be taking out.  It was interesting to watch them attempt to get through the culverts under the road.  As they bashed into the rock bridge support between the tubes, I was kind of glad I wasn't going to see them try to attempt the rapids, and especially glad that I wouldn't be around to perform any rescues.
