Middle Manistee River Cleanup
with the
Walton Junction Sportsman Club
What a fun day on the river.
This section from Lucas Bridge to US131 has just a few faster places but mostly it is
slow, deep and free of downed trees. That's perfect for tubers and we had plenty of them.
The first mile or so was very clean and then we found some trash.
I was happy to find a shoe in a tree and when I dropped it in my canoe,
I was attacked by a swarm of hornets. The nest was in the shoe and I finally
realized that I had to get it out of my boat which I did with my grabber.
I only got stung once but it was on my neck which was scary but I was ok after
Jackie Anderson gave me first aid. I was lucky.
Moral: Don't drop hornet nests in your canoe.
Rick and Sue Nyse opened their riverside home to us for lunch.
What a sweet couple they are. THANK YOU Sue and Rick!
Marsha and Paul Johnson from the WJSC also joined us and were
very successful finding trash along the way.
The rest of the day was uneventful. It was hot and we were all happy
to see the landing. Next time we will find a shorter way to do this project.
We plan to do this again next year.
MANY THANKS to the Chippewa Canoe Landing for a free shuttle for our entire crew!
