September 2 Harvey Bridge to Glengary Bridge
Published on 9/2/2018
This section of the Manistee was wide with not many obstacles. No good spots for lunch but many possibilities were sighted & could be doable with a little lower water level, the main issue being landing areas today were a little too deep.
Water seemed high & current was fast though little to no riffles. Jackie clocked our forward momentum at 3.5-4.0 mph just drifting. We made the whole trip in about 3.24 hours (including lunch & time picking up trash). Ron estimated the river mileage at about 8 but Jackie got a reading of 9.5 miles.
I'd have to say that this section was the most turtlely of the Manistee that I've paddled yet this summer. There was even a turtle cairn stacked three high on a log. Final official count by Jackie was 89!
Although it was not intended to be a cleanup, some of us just couldn't help ourselves & picked up trash along the way. We off loaded at Wilderness Canoe Rentals & later at a new dock that just got built by a resident on the river. He told us to leave bagged trash anytime & he would take care of it for us! We got about three bags total.
Eveyone felt this was a trip they would like to do again, so watch the calendar, it may be posted for a fall color tour.
Thanks to all the participants for a lovely outing!
