Trip Reports

October 13 Manistee, 131 to Baxter

Beautiful (cold!) day on the river

We started off with temps in the thirties, but there was plenty of sunshine lighting up the gorgeous fall colors.  After all the rain and gray days we've had lately, this was a welcome change.  And Jackie helpfully brought ice water enough for all seven of us: Lois (trip organizer), Jackie, Jane, Jocelyn (and Max), Tracie, Ron, and Glenn.

The river was beautiful.  The bluffs and hills were a mix of pine and cedar making a background for all the bright sugar maple and beech. There were deadheads poking up in the middle here and there, but the river was broad enough there always plenty of room to get around any obstacles, with enough curves and log piles to make it interesting.

We had a great spot for lunch.  The takeout was steep, but no-one had any problem.  And the view and the sunshine were great.  So were the hot drinks that people had brought along, though some of us decided we need more efficient thermos jugs.

It was breezy most of the day, but everyone was well prepared with plenty of layers.  There were a few chilly fingers and ears, but everyone stayed dry and ended the trip happy.  A great day!

We shared the parking lot at Baxter with Amish horses and buggies,
whose owners were likely walking the trails.
