Trip Reports

June 21 - Sturgeon Thrillseeker

Published on 6/21/2019
The Sturgeon Thrillseeker, my nickname, lived up to its reputation again. I had to postpone my TAPC paddle on 6/11 since it was flooded at 600 cfs versus our 200 normal high. It was 260 cfs today, so fast & pushy, challenging on every tight bend, paddling hard to get past the logjams & avoiding Mr Eddy's pull, with 4 dicey spots. the most difficult a narrow "S" curve between downed trees, which John managed backwards. There were also several bunny hops, which will take more agility once the water drops. The Sturgeon made the Pine look easy! We enjoyed spotting columbine, and blue & yellow flag iris. Due to the high water level, there were several homes that have had rock embankments installed due to loss near their homes. The Sturgeon has lots of big riffles and a gorgeous Tunnel of (cedar) Trees! Since we needed refreshment afterwards, we adjourned to the Thirsty Sturgeon in Wolverine before driving home. I Can.Not.Wait to paddle it again in fast water!
