Trip Reports

September 26 - Boardman: Beitner to the old YMCA

Published on 9/26/2019
Who:
Kathleen Imre, Jocelyn Trepte, John Heiam and Lois Goldstein
Where:
Boardman River, starting at Beitner Road and ending at the Old YMCA
River levels:
A bit higher than our previous trip on August 13; the USGS gauge at Beitner read 275 CFS and a height of 5.10 feet
Weather:
Sunny, cool and windy (my solo canoe got turned around by itself a couple of times)
Difficulty:
Lots of rocks to maneuver around - not a good section for beginners.  A plastic boat is a necessity, since we all managed to hit a rock or two, and in one spot, grounded out on a gravel bar in order to avoid a too-narrow slot mid-stream.

Major rapids right at the beginning at Keystone, where we kept all members of the group in sight, stopping to wait at the bottom of each drop.  More rock gardens at Lone Pine.  Took a short break at the Cass Road landing, but we weren't out of the woods yet.  At the site of the old Sabin Dam (which was taken out just a few months ago), we still had a few places to negotiate.

It was neat to paddle a section of the Boardman that we had never been to before.
