June 4 Morning paddle on Bass Lake

MORNING PADDLE ON BASS LAKE – JUNE 4, 2020

It was a picture-perfect summer morning for a relaxing paddle around Bass Lake. Lois, John, Jocelyn, Harold, Marlene, and Kathleen met at the Bass Lake DNR Access Site in Long Lake Township. Unfortunately, two participants had lengthier travel times, thanks to (1) an annoying detour for W. Silver Lake Road, and (2) an even more annoying discovery that there is another Bass Lake near Interlochen off Betsie River Road. But, no worries! Once we were all on the water, nature provided us mild temps, calm water, and a cloudless sky to complement pleasant conversation. We had the lake to ourselves, and although the pair of loons and eagle were not seen this day, we enjoyed paddling in the shallow bays and along two of the islands’ shores.

Nearing the completion of our Bass Lake circuit, Kathleen became disoriented and made an unexpected turn; somehow we ended up in New York Harbor. But again, no worries! We had a clear view of the Statue of Liberty and had no issues with shipping lanes, ferry traffic or crowds!

Once back at the boat launch and boats were loaded, everyone followed Kathleen to her home for a backyard picnic lunch. It was agreed that a repeat paddle around Bass Lake during Fall colors would be nice, so stay tuned!

Note from Outings Chair: I looked up a list of lakes in Michigan on Wikipedia.  They list 5 of them, but I know of at least two more that aren't even on the list.  We have at least two in Grand Traverse County!
