Twelve members of the club met at Steckert Bridge to paddle the South Branch of the AuSable to Smith Bridge. We all encountered a little rain on the drive to the access, but once there, we had dry skies. While the shuttle was being run, we were even treated to a little sun. As happens many times, Marv provided the shuttle service. Two members sat in the bed of his pickup (yes, that is legal in Michigan), and three other drivers rode in the cab. We all felt safe since everyone on the trip had been vaccinated against COVID-19.
Once on the river, the clouds moved in, but it didn’t rain until we were sitting under the trees at lunch. We didn’t even notice that it was raining, until Jackie pointed out the rain drops on the surface of the river. By the time we finished lunch, the sprinkles had stopped. However, the cool cloudy weather persisted until we reached the takeout at Smith Bridge. Then, the sun came out, and the clouds disappeared.
Because it was so gray, I didn’t take any scenery photos, even though the river was as beautiful as always. I did take these photos of the participants at the start. The only persons missing from this collection are Marv Puska our shuttle driver, and me, the photographer.
