Trip Reports

May 25 Memorial Day - Manistee Hodenpyl

Published on 5/25/2009

Who came?

Lois & John, Marv & Marlene Puska, Dean Tobias, Deena Barshney, Steve Somers, Laurie Leiser

Where did you go?

Manistee River from Hodenpyl Dam to Red Bridge

How was it?

Gorgeous!  We had a tailwind most of the way.

What kind of boats were there?

Two solo canoes (J&L), 6 kayaks (everyone else)

Anything noteworthy?

We saw only one other party at the put-in, but never saw them again.  Found a chair on a gravel bar, and fit it into John's canoe.  Leisurely lunch a bit further down.  Sunshine and temps in the 60's.  It was the inaugural trip for Laurie and her brand new kayak; she learned to ferry and a bit about paddlling efficiency.  Dean got to try out the solo canoe and will blame John if he decides to buy one.  Great current, with the usual fun riffles.  Lots of waterfalls.  A maniac ranger came speeding by with his powerboat; we thought about reporting him for reckless boating.  Ended with wonderful Ashby's ice cream in Mesick.
