Trip Reports

May 29 Boardman River

Published on 5/30/2009

Who came?

Lois & John, Sara Cockrell, Fred & Judy Swartz

Where did you go?

Boardman River from Brown Bridge Dam to Beitner Road

How was it?

Gorgeous!  Cool (will summer ever arrive?).  Very high water due to 3 days of rain.

What kind of boats were there?

One solo canoes (Sara), 4 kayaks (everyone else)

Anything noteworthy?

We had gorgeous weather for the paddle, and Sara helped tremendously by
knowing where any difficult spots might be.  Decided not to run the rapids.
The water was high and trucking, but manageable.    BUT - At one point, Sara
and I were in the back, the guys were in the front and Judy was in the middle.  We came around a bend, and as we lowered our heads to duck under one of the bridges, we saw Judy in the water.  She had obviously miscalculated the speed of the water and the effects of the bridge pilings.  But she had held onto the kayak and the paddle and made her way to the side.  Sara coached her up on shore and Judy emptied her own boat and changed clothes.  She has now learned to carry underwear too (and to have a complete set of car clothes).  Later, at Auntie Pasta's, she admitted to us that she was wearing Fred's pants.
