Trip Reports

June 14 Upper Manistee

Published on 6/14/2009

Who came?

Lois & John, Jocelyn, Bob Fitch, Judy & Fred, Maxi Neugebauer, Jim Feiker, Angie Willis

Where did you go?

Upper Manistee River from "John's Landing" to County 612

How was it?

Almost swimming weather - summer is finally here!!!

What kind of boats were there?

Two solo canoes (Jocelyn & Bob), everyone else in kayaks

Anything noteworthy?

We saw no other paddlers, just a bunch of fly fishermen and women.  There was one unauthorized swim break, when the paddler got caught in a bush and leaned upstream - a big no-no!  Maxi got lots of practice with her ferrying, both from an upstream as well as a downstream orientation.  Special thanks to Bob for his lumberjack skills.  We all got plenty of practice scootching under trees.  The remoteness of the stream was downright magical, and the newcomers could hardly believe that this 20-foot-wide river was the same one that we see further downstream.  We all had a ball!

Our lunch stop

A tangle in the woods

Angie and Jim enjoy a cold one they picked up at Deward
